Giorgio Armani - Biography

Date of Birth

July 11, 1934

Place of Birth

Piacenza, in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy - about 50 miles south of Milan.

Career

Although Giorgio Armani is one of the most influential designers in the world, it was only by chance that he broke into the fashion industry. He studied medicine at Milan University for two years, made a brief foray into photography, then entered the army to complete his military service.

After leaving the army, he became a window dresser at the prestigious department store, La Rinascente in Milan. During this time, he travelled frequently to London, gathering inspiration, and developing the classic style that he has become renowned for.

Having gained a comprehensive knowledge of design and fabric he joined Nino Cerruti in 1961 as a designer for the menswear company, Hitman. He left nine years later in order to start a freelance design business with the encouragement of his close friend Sergio Galeotti, introducing his own menswear label in 1974. He gradually adapted his designs for women, and his first womenswear collection was established a year later, in 1975, in partnership with Galeotti.

Since 1975, Armani has launched a number of lines, including Accessories, Giorgio Armani Junior, Swimwear, Underwear and Occhiali (eyewear). He has also added a number of cheaper diffusion lines such as Emporio Armani, Le Collezioni and Mani. Today, the Armani retail empire spans more than 35 countries and comprises some 280 stores with annual sales of more than $1 billion.

Armani is known to be a workaholic, and believes that clothes should be made to be worn not just seen. His relaxed designs for women are inspired by menswear, softened into a more supple, practical silhouette. His collections are elegant and understated: easy-fit clothing, precisely cut and beautifully tailored.

Forbes has acknowledged Giorgio Armani to be the world's most successful designer, with a net worth of $1.7 billion. He has homes in Broni, Forte dei Marmi, and Pantelleria (Italy), and in St. Tropez (French Riviera).

Place of Birth

Reggio Calabria, Italy

Career

Versace was born in Southern Italy, where his mother supported the family with her small tailoring business. He soon learned to design and make clothes, subsequently selling them in the family shop. In 1972, he was given a chance to show off his talents when he was contracted by Fiori Fiorentini to create a collection. He moved on to producing designs for Italian fashion labels such as De Parisi, Genny, Callaghan and Alma. When he worked for Complice in 1974, his name was finally included in the brand name.

He opened up his first boutique in Milan in 1978, and launched his 'Instante' label in 1985. This line was similar in style to the original Versace label, but aimed at a younger, less affluent audience. He moved to Miami in 1992, where he designed the T-shirt and pastel jacket look for Miami Vice.

Gianni's designs were renowned for their bold colours, interesting fabrics and striking cuts, and he personally created items for celebrities such as Elton John and Courtney Love.

Gianni Versace was gunned down in front of his Miami mansion in July 1997. His alleged murderer, serial killer Andrew Cunanan, committed suicide eight days later.

Gianni's granddaughter, Allegra, became sole heiress of Gianni Versace; her uncle, Santo, became CEO of the company, and her mother, Donatella, took over as head of design.

Date and Place of Birth

Domenico Dolce: September 13, 1958 in Polizzi Generosa a small village near Palermo, Sicily.

Stefano Gabbana: November 14, 1962 in Venice; grew up in Milan.

Career

Dolce is the son of a Sicilian tailor, and grew up working in his father's clothing factory, drawing and sewing. Although he began studying science at university, he soon became bored of the subject, and dropped out to attend art school. Upon graduation, he left Sicily and moved to Milan, in search of fame and fortune.

Gabbana had always been interested in fashion, and studied graphic design at a fashion college, moving away from the fashion industry to become an advertising art director after graduation. His interest in fashion never waned though, and by 1980, he was working for the same Milan-based fashion designer as Dolce.

Sharing many of the same interests and influences, they formed a partnership in 1981, acting as consultants to factories and thread companies. In 1985, they were invited by the organisers of the Milano Collezioni to showcase their designs in the New Talents forum, which led them to present their first independent women's ready-to-wear show the following spring. Using friends as models, their creations won international acclaim, attracting buyers from stores such as Harvey Nichols and Browns.

Since then, they have enlarged their repertoire to include lingerie, beachwear, menswear, accessories, perfume, eyewear, footwear and a ready-to-wear bridal collection. The duo has also recorded a dance music CD under the D&G label. Ten years after their first collection, they were reporting a company turnover of $700 million.

Dolce & Gabbana trademarks include underwear-as-outerwear, extravagantly printed and embroidered coats, pinstripe suits, and black. They are renowned for making women look, quite simply, devastatingly sexy. Their designs are often to be seen on the likes of Isabella Rossellini, Nicole Kidman and Madonna, for whom they created the now-famous "Kylie Minogue" tribute T-shirt.
